Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a NYC teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district in the South Bronx, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students are on the autism spectrum and in a specialized school. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things predictable and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
I would like to provide my students with the manipulatives, technology and classroom environment to meet each of their individualized needs.
My classroom lacks basic supplies and has minimal technology. To help promote my struggling math students, number line strips for their desk and the Hand2Mind Rekenrek will help them with their addition and subtraction facts. To help with their reading, the students would benefit from laptops to independently engage in reading comprehension activities online. In addition to technology to encourage reading, bean bags would provide flexible seating and improve the classroom environment. My students are middle schoolers and bean bag seats will provide a relaxing place to enjoy reading a book from the class library.
Contributing to my class will assist in providing the tools that individual students need to be engaged learners.
My Project
All students strive when they are provided with activities that challenge them at their individual level within a positive classroom environment. The pizza fractions, rekenrek frame and number line will provide the opportunities to play with numbers in order to retain math facts. The bean bag and computer will offer different opportunities for students to enjoy and be challenge with their reading.
Students in a specialized school deserve the opportunity to have individualized instruction and hands on activities.
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of mathematics and literacy in a flexible and inviting classroom environment.
