Middle school age is a very curious age. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are sponges and they soak up anything you will give them and never cease asking questions. I am the lead teacher at a rural school in south Mississippi with nearly 1,500 students. We have about 65% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We have a large population of English Language Learners as well. We have students that live in extreme poverty, and others who don't.
My Project
As a Title 1 school with more than half of our student population receiving free and reduced lunch, we often have students that do not have basic school items such as backpacks. Many of these students also have trouble meeting the dress code requirements of the district. We do what we can to help these students and we have created a clothes closet here on campus that students can access when they have dress code needs.
Something as small as a new backpack or some new socks can boost the self-esteem of a student and make them hold their head a little higher.
We know that we are here to educate children, but we truly care about the whole child and it isn't always about academics. When we care about our students and work to address all of their needs, we make a difference for kids.
