Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach sixth-grade math and science in a low-income school with a large number of second language learners and special needs students. 40 students of various backgrounds and levels are packed into each of my classes. They love coming to school but face many challenges at home and many have no parental academic support. And now they are at home trying to learn to be financial literate at a distance due the corona virus school closures.
My goal is to keep them actively engaged in financial literacy and make school and learning exciting all while getting them ready for the world beyond school.
In my classroom, we work to educate the child as a "whole". My students need academic, emotional, and physical education.
"The future of the world is in my classroom today," Ivan W Fitzwater.
My Project
Kids spend half their day in a desk and chair working to be financially literate then go home and sit at the table to do homework or sit and play video games. Children need to move and burn energy in order to focus academically and to be healthy. My students work hard and have inspired me to ditch the traditional desk/chair classroom for a more kid-inspired classroom that is flexible and accommodating for everyone. We need standing desk so bodies can move, but brains can focus.
My students spend a lot of time in fluid groupings working on real-world projects to develop their financial literacy.
They need a workspace to show their thinking and be able to collaborate in their math groups. Flexible seating areas create a more comfortable and productive work environment. Standing desks are also great for children with ADHD! Classrooms need to be child-centered, not teacher centered. Please help us get the standing desks that will keep students moving on their math (financial literacy) throughout the day but focused.
My students have inspired a change in my classroom and now I need help showing them their inspiration and ideas matter.
As a teacher I know I have to educate children as a "whole" - academically, emotionally and physically.
