Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in an economically low income urban area of a major city in New York State. The students in my school come from diverse backgrounds and many of them are new to the United States and speak languages other than English.
My students are exceptionally talented artists, despite the many challenges they face.
They enter the art room each time eager to see what is in store for them to create, imagine and dream up!
The language of art is truly universal, for many of my students who struggle with adapting to life in a new country and learning a new language the art room is a safe place where everyone is welcome. Art is the language of the heart and the expression of the soul where words are not a necessity for successful communication.
My Project
Mandalas have been used by many cultures throughout history and across the globe. Mandalas are circles divided into symmetrical designs that represent wholeness, peace and are objects of focus for meditation.
Mandalas are even found Pop culture as a means of relaxation in an often stressful society.
Students are aware of the symbol but do not yet understand the meaning.
In this project students will explore color mixing and blending by using the color diffusing circles. Students will then use the black and metallic Sharpie markers to add a radial design that incorporates symmetry, balance and pattern to achieve a feeling of relaxation and calmness.
The completed mandalas will be displayed in the art room window to create the calming effect of color diffusing stained glass windows.
