Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is composed of 8 Medically Fragile, Special Education students from the ages of 7-9 yrs. old. Our students have disabilities ranging from Cerebral Palsy to Seizure Disorders, Degenerative diagnoses, Autism, and Genetic Disorders. 6 of our students are non-ambulatory and in wheelchairs. 1 student is able to walk with the assistance of a gate trainer walker. Only 1 student is able to walk on his own. All of the students are non-verbal. A few are vocal, but they do not have very functional forms of communications. Some students are able to use signs for "more" and "all done" or even shake their heads "no." The medical aspect is lengthy, from feeding tubes and medications, to exercises for non weight bearing students are the norm. Our students rely heavily on sensory stimulation and lots of love, daily! We all work hard to give each student the BEST DAY EVER!!
My Project
Our students thrive off of sensory stimulation each and every day. Therapeutic Horseback riding would be an excellent activity that suits all of our students.
“Therapeutic riding uses the horse to deliver traditional physical, occupational, and speech therapy in a unique way – providing integration of fine motor, gross motor, speech and sensory integration in one experience,” says Dr. Raffalli, from Ironestone's website.
Because our students require medical attention, 2 nurses are required and proper transportation for their wheelchairs, it is difficult to set up field trips that we can afford. This would be an excellent, fun, and safe outing for our kiddos!
