Ms. Lewis from Snellville GA is requesting computers & tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need laptops in order to have a better hands-on experience with medical office assistant duties. Process such as medical office scheduling, finances and medical records are just a few of the activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The scholars I teach attend a Title I school where 60% receive free or reduced lunch. The students range in economic background but 73% of the students are African American. Like many students, college seems like a far off option so the school has adapted a model known as the Academy. The Academy helps prepare students in the career and technical education courses so that they are able to receive certificates to better prepare them for the workforce. The students diligently work to prepare themselves in the career and technical education classes. Many see this as an opportunity to help themselves succeed by giving them a stepping stone for a future education that may seem hopeless otherwise.
The students are hardworking individuals who astound me everyday in their abilities and their drive to achieve.
The Academy is comprised of three classes that are taken throughout the sophomore, junior and senior years. Each class is constructed to build on the one before in its level of complexity and career readiness skills. This helps the scholars learn different traits of an employee, such as the difference in soft vs. hard skills, professionalism and writing resumes and cover letters.
My students need computers to learn software that is essential for a medical office assistant. The students are working towards certification in this area while they are getting their high school diplomas. The computers will give the students the ability to practice scheduling patients for appointments, electronic health records and patient billing and coding.
These donations will help my students become career ready in the field of medical office assistant.
Each student is given the opportunity to complete the pathway for Health Science and sit for the certification exam. This allows the students to leave high school with a certificate that they can use to work right out of school or use to gain experience in the medical field.
Most of the students in the Health Science field are preparing themselves for careers that range from nursing to nurse practitioner and even doctors. This pathway gives them the opportunity to learn about all the careers associated with the medical field, all about the body and everything they would need to know to work in and run a medical office.
