When my students enter our Communication Studies and TV production cycle class, they are embarking on an exciting journey into the fields of media production, news writing and advertising. For many students, this course sparks passion for media production that outlasts the marking period we spent together, and enables students to explore future career paths in media production, including journalism, TV broadcasting, screen writing, videography, and graphic design.
By middle school, many classes have lost the "spark" of elementary school learning; this class gives students the opportunity to be curious learners, to play pretend and to imagine beyond their limitations.
From the moment my students enter the classroom, they are eager to get their hands on our newsroom equipment and start creating. The magic they feel when manipulating a TV news camera, adjusting the setting on our sound board, or fine tuning the image on our videoswitcher is contagious! Over 200 students engage with this course each year, and their projects are broadcasted to our school and local community through our morning new show.
My Project
In our ever changing world, I know they will need basic computer literacy and media training to successfully navigate the academic and personal challenges they face. From running a small business, to working for a major cooperation, to promoting causes on social media, students need experience creating content and getting hands on with media. Producing their own content enables students learn how to responsibly create and consume media culture.
By donating to our project you will not only be helping students get real world experience in media production, you will be enabling "pretend" and "imagination" to return to the middle school classroom.
Becoming hands on with media production and news will also teach my students real world skills, open career paths, and spark life-long passions. The box lights requested in this project will help teach my students how to use lighting to tell a story, and how take high quality photos for advertising or social media promotions. The swivel drafting stools will become the "pilot" seat for our lead anchors, who will guide our school through world and local news. The microphone shields will enable my students to become true sound technicians, and refine their understanding for the role of audio in media projects. Finally, the news backdrop will enable us to use our video switcher to its highest capabilities, broadcasting graphics and videos right within the studio space.
