We have a very diverse student population. Our students come from a wide variety of income levels and social settings, with over 70% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunches, many of my students don't have access to 21st-Century Skill tools.
Our middle school students thrive on learning from examples set for them and from those activities they are able to participate in during class, especially those involving 21st Century skills.
They are busy learning about themselves and how they will fit into the big wide world. With so much structure and focus on testing and standards, students need the time to let loose and allow their minds to have different experiences and by doing and participating. One of the tools teachers use is class projects. Learning to use various electronic devices to get out their message and learning to create effective media messages is a very powerful lesson.
They love the freedoms offered in middle school, when compared to elementary school, and are learning how to make decisions that will create positive outcomes.
My Project
Learning how you look and sound when presenting yourself and projects is essential for success not only in school, but in areas of employment and interviews. Using simple digital cameras and voice recorders allows our students to see and hear what they are producing and gives them the tools to learn to alter their presentation skills.
The use of digital cameras and recorders has the added benefit of learning how to use digital tools, transferring digital content and editing, allowing them to create an even more impressive presence.
It's time for our students to take a step into their own futures!
