The student population of Ilima Intermediate School is representative of the diverse communities of the Ewa Plains. First, there are students from "well-rooted" families of the community who represent a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds. Second, there are some military dependents whose enrollment in the Campbell Complex schools last from two to five years. Third, there are a growing number of students from families who have immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines, Asia, and the South Pacific area including Micronesia.
My Project
Our students need creative and innovative spaces to work at in the Media Center. Prior to our renovation, students would come in and read or do homework, which often led to talking story. We are working collaboratively with our STEM teacher to assist us in designating areas for our maker spaces for 21st century learning. We are starting small with the purchase of carpet pieces and will slowly build with furniture purchases.
If our Media Center feels more inviting and we have designated spaces and work areas, we are confident that it will draw more of our students in.
The Media Center will consist of spaces that encourage creativity, rather than it being a place to just hang out.
