Mechanical Pencil Project

My Students

I teach on the south side of Indianapolis. Our school district is has had a recent influx of refugee children. A large number of families from Burma have migrated to the south side of Indianapolis. The Chin families are struggling to become a part of the American culture. Many of the refugee and non-refugee families are dealing with financial hardships.

My teammates and I work with many students that have special learning needs and emotional needs.

Many of these 6th graders are at a point in their educational careers where they are not interested in academics. Sixth graders are at a crucial point in their lives where they are deciding what kind of a thinker and learner they will be as they enter middle school and high school.

My Project

Many of my students' families can not afford school supplies. I want to take that burden away from the students. My hope is that all students will feel that they have the supplies that they need to do their best work. Mechanical pencils help students maximize learning time because there is no wasted time sharpening a pencil at the beginning of class. I will also make supplies available for students to pick-up for use at home while we are dealing with a fully-remote learning schedule. Mechanical pencils would help the students create a successful learning environment.
