Ms. D'Amato from Brooklyn NY is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
The cost of this proposal for 35 books on a variety of subjects including dinosaurs, outer space and the city of New York that will help flesh out a classroom library and help the students experience reading as a process of discovery is $494, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

I am a second-grade teacher in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. Just as most people don\'t want to eat the same thing for dinner every night, students don\'t want to read the same books day after day, year after year. While our school does provide classrooms with some books, it is common for first- and second-grade classes to receive many of the same books. This means that the students quickly become bored with the book selection, and they then become disinterested in reading. One of my goals as a teacher is to get the students on a path towards becoming life-long lovers of reading. While many of the students naturally enjoy reading, for some, reading feels like a chore. In an effort to boost the students\' overall interest in reading, I would like to be able to provide them with a wide variety of texts from which to choose. This proposal is for funding to purchase 35 books that I\'ve selected to supplement my classroom library. Over the past couple of years I have gained a sense of some of the subjects which interest the children, such as dinosaurs, outer space, the world of nature, and their home, New York City. The books I\'ve selected are wonderful, a mix of fiction and nonfiction, and, among others, include: \"Where the Wild Things Are\" and the Nutshell Library, both by Maurice Sendak, \"Fall Is Here! I Love It!\" by Elaine W. Good, the Madonna Box Set of stories by Madonna, \"How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?\" by Jane Yolen, \"First Flight: The Story of Tom Tate and the Wright Brothers\" by George Shea, \"John Glenn: Young Astronaut\" by Michael Burgan, \"Don\'t Know Much About the Solar System\" by Kenneth C. Davis, and \"Reaching for the Moon\" by Buzz Aldrin. These nine books and the 26 others will surely help my students understand how interesting it can be to read a book, cover to cover. Please help me put our kids on a reading diet rich in variety, and then . . . watch them grow! Thank you.
