Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of us can probably think back to a time when someone was trying to explain something to us and we just weren't understanding, because we needed to get our hands working while we learned. Many of the students at my school are kinesthetic learners who really benefit from hands on activities.
My students are active, creative, and curious students from a high poverty background in northern California.
About 80% of the students are English Language Learners whose parents work hard in hopes of their children gaining a good education. In many cases the families are pushing their kids past the level of education of previous generations. Our school is a community-run charter school that strives to shape our classroom experiences to the needs of our kids but in today's economic climate, ordering supplemental books or supplies is a real challenge without heavily dipping into the teacher's personal income. Like many students, they dream big, and they have even bigger questions. To have a classroom where they can explore freely is a dream come true.
My Project
Our Junior Academy grades (6-8) has been developing a sequence of fundamental skills that we want our students to have mastered by the time they graduate and move on to our local high schools. These include study skills, note taking skills, and a variety of problem solving and investigative skills that will serve them in many disciplines. When we began introducing these, we immediately found that our students broke out of the all-too-common image of a bored, disengaged student, and became independent learners who, when presented with a question, could pursue many different avenues in gathering the information. This set of measuring equipment will help form the beginning foundation for measurement and data collection skills that will assist them in years to come. The equipment for effectively measuring mass will also complete a set of materials we currently have for measuring only liquids and length, making the students' access to data collection materials complete and well-rounded.

Each year we set the bar higher and provide a more rigorous education for our youth. In the last two years we've established expectations for ourselves as teachers and for our students, and defined exactly what growth we want to see, so that our kids will flourish academically as they progress to each grade level. Supporting our students' growth in the sciences is a huge part of this vision.
