Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school located in a lower-socioeconomic (high poverty) area in Salem, OR. Many of our students come from bilingual households where their first language is Spanish, Russian or another language represented at our school. As a school, our goal is to focus on college and career readiness both academically and behaviorally. Our school provides a rigorous curriculum, wonderful, supportive teachers, and a safe learning environment for all kids.

School is a place where our students practice being citizens by adhering to our school values: being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind.

Despite the challenges students face at home and at school, we are always trying to create meaningful academic and social-emotional experiences that pique their interests. All of our students want to do well; we continue to need tools and supports to help every child build skills to achieve their potential.

Our students have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and far more adverse childhood experiences than any person should. However, they come to school with a desire to learn, grow, and overcome challenges. Many think school is a place to learn reading, writing, and math. Our students must also learn they are valued and resilient people.

My Project

We all want our students to come to school each day, ready to learn and build meaningful relationships. However, many students are affected by other life circumstances that prevent them from being ready to learn. Our team works to find ways to meet students where they are at (emotionally, socially, and behaviorally), build their self esteem and confidence, and help them to connect to our school community.

Our students take pride in our sensory and wellness room and want to help and contribute to cleaning and maintaining the space.

Students love having jobs that involve cleaning! Vacuuming, sweeping, and wiping down tables are popular "jobs" in our room. When students help they are getting both physical activity and a sense of purpose and belonging. When students know that what they are doing is meaningful, helpful, and necessary- they build a sense of community and their self esteem.
