Students in my classroom live in a high-poverty small town in a rural area. The needs of these students today are vastly different than the needs of students in the past. Teachers in our building are finding that students today need more hands-on "alternative" learning experiences.
My students learn differently than any other group of students I've ever taught - they have a wide variety of needs that need to be met in a unique way.
Students in my classroom need playful, hands-on, manipulatives to fully engage in learning.
My Project
There is very little wiggle room in the school day. Students and teachers have a strict schedule they are mandated to stick to. Students in my building have about a 20 minute period in the morning meant for arrival, morning jobs, eating breakfast, and getting ready for the day. During this time, many students are given the boring assignment of bell work. Many educators today give students "bell work" (a worksheet or something similar) to keep students occupied in the morning.
I am looking for a more engaging and meaningful way to utilize this time with hands-on activities.
These activities will relate to our curriculum, while incorporating a play-based approached.
Each table will be given a tub for a week. Inside the tub could be the game of Uno to practice number recognition and promote social skills, a scale and counters to compare, measure, and count, or letter beads to string to practice sight words and build fine motor muscles.
