One of the things I love most about the 23 faces I see every day is how diverse this group is. I have students from more than four different ethnicity groups. Many of them are first-generation American citizens whose parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet. They are all wonderfully unique and different, but the thing they have in common is the most important for me: They love walking in the door of Room 151 each day.
I want to be the absolute best version of myself for them each day.
If I'm not the kindest and hardest working person they know, how can I ask them to give me their best each day as well?
My Project
Our day starts early (7:20 am!), and I want my students to begin in the best way possible. I've been researching alternatives to morning work, and I believe this collection of math and literacy materials is the perfect way to grow my students' excitement to start their day.
Morning stations will promote critical 21st century skills, allow them to grow as collaborators, and foster their individual interests and passions.
I am so excited to see their faces when these materials become a reality for our classroom. I thought about each of my students as I looked for resources to build our morning station experiences. Our literacy tubs will be filled with the requested Tile Lock Scrabble boards, Boggle, and Buzzword Junior to grow spelling and vocabulary skills. The math and logic bins will challenge students with individual and partner games like Mastermind, Amaze, Izzi, IQ Twist, and Math Dice. Math, literacy, and art can come together in our creativity tubs. I can't wait to see their faces when they see the Lego Station set up with books filled with ideas to get them started. Or the 3D art project I picked out for a specific pair of students who will undoubtedly squeal with delight when they see it. Materials can be stored in the Sterilite latch boxes and rolling storage carts.
All of my students' interests are represented within this project. The forty-five minutes we spend together each day before the morning bell rings shouldn't be spent trying to decipher another worksheet. I know this will be the perfect way to get their brain cells buzzing the minute they walk in the door.
