Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am searching for someone to inspire and make a difference in the lives of children who need it the most. I am a fourth grade teacher in a very low-income, high-need area of New York. I've taught the same twenty students in second through fourth grades. As a result, my students and I have developed a positive relationship through the years. My students come from diverse backgrounds and face many challenges both at school and at home, as well as a lack of school materials and resources. About half of my students come from families who speak a language other than English at home. This makes parental involvement very difficult to attain. Therefore, I feel a great responsibility to teach these children all I can, and to the best of my ability. Despite the numerous challenges we face, I believe my students possess a great deal of academic potential.

As I mentioned, I have developed a close relationship with this group of students. I have the advantage of knowing my students' strengths and weaknesses very well. I know that these supplies would be of practical and everyday use to my children. These supplies, activities, and reference materials would be much appreciated.

As previously stated, my school is very under-resourced. My classroom does not contain any student dictionaries, or calculators, which is difficult because the math program we use requires students to use calculators somewhat regularly. I also hope to obtain some art supplies, as this year I have added an art center to my classroom. (Having the same students for three years is a challenge in its own right, as I have to create new ideas and activities for them as they advance to a new grade.) Although the art center is currently lacking supplies, it's a fun activity for children as a reward for good behavior or completing tasks in a timely manner. They just love it! Therefore, I'd like to continue with it, especially since it's something new and different for them. Finally, I would greatly appreciate the learning center activities and books that I requested. These activities will be very beneficial to my children, as fourth graders are required to take statewide tests in Science, Math, and Language Arts.

I greatly look forward to the possibility of acquiring some or all of these materials for my students. My students, as well, will be greatly appreciative. I believe that this donation will greatly contribute to the continued success of my students. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness, generosity, and consideration.
