Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are from all different walks of life. We serve low income as well as high achieving students. Our school is situated in one of the most diverse locations in San Diego with one of the most diverse populations and this is something that I hope to explore through art and our community.
Our students overcome obstacles everyday working with each other and the different backgrounds of our school.
They overcome the obstacles with grace, warmth, and community connections.
My Project
At our school, we focus on the students identity and making meaningful work. In art we are discussing fine art and how we can use different Elements of Art as well as different art movements and techniques to show our voices and give our work meaning. Currently my students are drawing on reclaimed tables from around the school. Our tables have different textures that can alter the way a work looks and frustrate students. We also like to get different perspectives and choose different places in the room to work from. Some students choose the rug and floor, while other perch themselves on tables and chairs in different ways. No matter how a students work best, I want them to have a nice surface to create their work on. We regularly strive for meaningful work, and with surfaces that give an undesired texture, it can be hard to let a students voice through.
The students and I are asking for some Blick Sketch Pad Boards to draw on and Drawing Paper so that students can have a nice, clean, plain surface to make meaningful art on.
Allowing them to choose their own texture, one that will help their voice shine.
My students are very excited and driven however, we would really like a better surface to create art on so that the true image of their work shines through and we can continue to make meaningful art.
