Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's the hardest part of my day when I have to work with mixed aged groups. However, I see that cooking is one of those subjects that unifies rather than divides students. I see that they are fully invested in the result of their cooking efforts but I think that with the right resources they can fully invest in their educational portion as well. Budget wise, my hands are currently tied; I find myself buying all of the produce needed for various recipes. Most supplies are provided but there are limited amounts available, unfortunately not enough for each student to have the opportunity to fully develop independent cooking skills of their own.
These hard-working students are open, willing to learn, and digest healthy nutritional facts.
I have personally seen these student grow from Kinder to 5th grade. They are growing into their own, challenging themselves and others to become successful in their own right. I have a handful of students that need the opportunity to move and learn at their own pace, otherwise I lose their attention. Please help me provide materials to promote evoke learning at whatever pace students need.
My Project
We are looking forward to kicking off our month of April theme cooking: home cooked meals! We are going to be learning about the nutrition that comes from meals that we can all cook at home. We will have to use all the skills we have accumulated thus far, including but not limited to using the correct hygienic procedures, using knives appropriately on the cutting boards, and spice exploration! We will be adding our new supplies to help develop safe sauteing and further develop out individual cutting board skills.
With these new donations, students will no longer be limited to cooking in groups but have room to grow and cook all on their own.
I will be supervising and provide help only when asked. My students have been practicing in groups of 3 to 4. They don't always get a turn to add ingredients or use the kitchen tools because of limitations of supplies. This has inhibited their growth of kitchen skills. With these new supplies, not only will they get to be challenged, they will also be growing their confidence in themselves.
