My Students

I teach in a Title I elementary school where students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My first graders are very eager young learners. The majority of my students are of Haitian descent. My school has an enrollment of approximately 450 students.

My students are enjoy hands-on activities such as STEM bins and Lego blocks.

Most of my students come from homes with limited resources so it is essential for me to expose them to as many new experiences as possible. I have several students with focusing and emotional problems. My school has limited resources.

My Project

The use of LEGOs during our math block will allow my students to decompose and compose structures according to mathematical terms. Young learners acquire more knowledge and retain information longer when their learning experience is more meaningful and engaging. The studs on the LEGOs allow my students to count by twos and fours. The part-part whole model can be more clearly understand when they can actually use the LEGOs to make arrangements and solve calculations. This will improve my students fluency rates as well. Each student will be given a Ziploc bag with a number of LEGOs as well as a board to assemble their combinations.
