My students need a pencil sharpener in the classroom, so that they don't have to write with dull pencils.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like to write with a newly sharpened pencil? Would you like to concentrate on your writing instead of worrying about your pencil being dull? Just imagine how getting a sharpener in the classroom will make a world of difference.
I teach in a fourth grade classroom where seventy percent of my students are English Learners.
The school is located in an inner-city community where there are gang violence and crime. The students don't have a lot of resources at home including something as simple as a pencil sharpener. A lot of my students require me to provide them with sharpened pencils to take home so they may complete their homework. The simple joy of a sharpened pencil is quite motivational for my students. It makes the difference in producing clear, quality homework or careless, scribbled homework.
My Project
A pencil sharpener will be greatly appreciated in my classroom. Currently, the whole school of 500 students shares two pencil sharpeners in the workroom. Student helpers help me sharpen the pencils by waiting for their turn at these two sharpeners. Often times the wait period is long and pencils are not all sharpened by the time the bell rings. By having a pencil sharpener in the classroom, students would be able to sharpen their pencils during the school day. With the sharpener, students will also be able to sharpen their pencils after school instead of going home with dull pencils. My students will be able to be more focused on their work instead of worrying about their pencils being dull.
A sharpened pencil in the hands of a child makes a world of difference.
Students should be learning and staying focus on their academic studies instead of worrying about something as little as a sharpened pencil. A pencil sharpener within the classroom will simply save learning time for the students, as well as keep their attention on their work.
