My Students
A school day can last a very long time when you are 6 years old. In an effort to keep attention spans intact, we move from our desks to a group area several times each day. While sitting together on a rug, we can read, we can listen, we can relax, and we can learn.
With a very diverse class possessing a variety of learning styles, it is a daily challenge to reach all students in a meaningful way.
Kids today need to be challenged & ready to step into the 21st century with their skills and knowledge. These Nooks will provide a meaningful outlet to accomplish this!
Built in '75, we are a county school in a suburb in TN. We serve an extremely diverse population of children. We have neighborhood walkers, apartment dwellers on buses, and daycare vans delivering our 700+ students each day. Our attendance rate is 96%. We have 28% on the free/reduced lunch program. Our students have come to know that our school places an emphasis on hands-on, meaningful learning! They know that their teachers love and truly care for them and their learning experience. Many view this school as a home away from home. We expect excellence and effort from every learner, and they do not disappoint us. We strive to use differentiated teaching to address each learner's individual learning style.
My Project
Because our school was built in 1975, there are years of "love" that are beginning to show. Not quite as bright as she once was, she still has lots of years to give our students. However, the wear and tear are beginning to show. A fire-safe, colorful rug will provide my small students with a comfortable place to sit, when not working at their desks. I try to incorporate a lot of movement during our school day. I feel this provides the students with a chance to catch their breath and to maintain their focus. While not as exciting as the latest technology, a fun, new rug will provide my kids with hours of pleasure, whether listening to an old favorite piece of children's literature or discovering an exotic far-away location on our map. Sometimes, it's the smallest things that have the greatest impact. This rug will make a difference in our classroom every day!
While something as simple as a colorful, fire-retardant rug may sound simple, it's these little things that make children smile!
In addition to providing comfort during group time, the rug will also provide an extra space to work when children are working on individual or small group projects. Our rug will bind us in a familiar space when reading together from trade books or text books. It is an item that we will put to use each and every school day!
