My students’ passion for the French language and culture amazes me. As Americans, we can sometimes feel so isolated from other countries. To see them get excited about learning about the world around them, brings me joy. Since I can’t physically bring francophone countries to them, I use technology to bring the French speaking into the classroom. Learning a second language can feel overwhelming for many students, especially those with special needs. However, technology makes it possible to differentiate in a more meaningful way. I’ve been teaching at Dickinson for 22 years and I can honestly say my students are one of the main reasons I’ve stayed so long. Before my third child I would take students abroad every other year. Seeing their eyes light up at the wonders of the world is inspirational. Once my own children are old enough, I plan to travel with students again.
My Project
Since many of my students are remote, we zoom everyday. Currently, my Chromebook cannot handle Zoom with videos and sometimes it delays, or simply shuts down. Students deserve to learn in the most comprehensible manner. Since I teach French, it is important that students are able to see and hear me clearly. It is also important that I see students so I can gauge their speaking proficiency level as well as develop a rapport with them. Developing relationships is important to me because language acquisition requires students to put their guard down and take risks. Getting to know each other makes the process easier. There are also certain language software programs that I would like to use but require a PC. These programs will help to improve student engagement on campus and during remote learning.
