My students need a variety of wind instruments as we incorporate health awareness music activities in the classroom.

The students that I work with are severely emotionally impaired in grades 2nd through 8th who attend a day treatment program in an urban setting. Some of the diagnoses include mental illness, dual-diagnoses cognitively/emotionally impaired and autism. Many of our students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds including African-American, Mexican-American, and Caucasian. Furthermore, many of our students come from pre-dominantly low-income single parent families.
As a board-certified music therapist, I am always looking for alternatives to incorporate health awareness through music activities.
Many of my students have experienced living in poverty and in shelters due to homelessness. I receive a yearly budget of $200 for 70 students. However, I am still required to provide students a therapeutic environment for student growth.
I am requesting a variety of inexpensive wind instruments that will be used as a tool to incorporate health awareness. As a board-certified music therapist, I am always looking for alternatives to incorporate music activities as a means to decrease students anxiety after they have left home. Playing a wind instrument can offer one such solution.
There are many therapeutic benefits of playing wind instruments that includes relieving stress, improving hand-eye coordination, and developing confidence and calmness under pressure.
Students will also improve their socialization skills by playing with a group, since they will be surrounded by their peers playing a similar instrument.
Along with the therapeutic benefits, I will also be teaching students how to play the wind instruments. As a culminating activity, students will perform at one of our annual programs.
