I teach seventh and eighth grade math and science at Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx. The student population is 1,630. 47% of the students are female and 53% are male. 60% of the students are Hispanic and 36% are Black. 90% of the students are eligible for free lunch. The students are required to complete an Earth Science Exit Project at the end of the school year. The students must research and investigate a topic in Earth Science, such as plate tectonics, weathering or the greenhouse effect. Many of the students do not have access to computers at home so they are given time to type their projects in school. Most of the students do not know how to type. The Mavis Beacon typing program will improve their speed, accuracy and rhythm in a relatively short amount of time. Typing classes were once provided to students in the past. Many schools had to drop the class because of cuts in the education budget. Typing is a skill that everyone needs to develop in order to be competitive in the workforce. Moreover, students are often asked to type their assignments in all subject areas; however, they are not taught. This skill will be carried to high school and college. Many instructors require that all assignments are typed and some will not accept hand written papers. I teach four classes of approximately thirty students. I would like teach all of my students how to type using the Mavis Beacon typing program. Typing is a basic skill that students will need to acquire for educational and professional purposes. We live in a technological and digital age. Computers are essential tools in our society. Individuals who possess skills such as typing will be able to make advancements while those who lack certain skills will be left behind. I learned how to type in high school using the program and found it to be very effective.
