This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from difficult backgrounds, ones I can't even imagine. We are a Title I school with 100% free/reduced lunch. My students face challenges every day that I could never dream of. What I love about my students, though, is that no matter what hardship they have faced in life they refuse to let people put them in a box. They are bright young men and young women. They push themselves to do better. They are fighters. They crave education. They want to learn.
They want to be better than what society tells them they are.
My Project
This year in my 12th grade Multicultural Literature class I want to expose my students to texts they may not read otherwise. As I planned for this course, I knew I wanted to incorporate Maus into the curriculum. Now, with the recent banning of Maus in Texas, I knew I HAD to teach this beautiful, moving piece of literature.
The graphic novel will capture the attention of my students - the harrowing story within will hold it until the very last page.
Multicultural Literature is about introducing students to different cultures from all over the world through stories. Many students are familiar with the Holocaust, but Maus will open their eyes and minds to a unique perspective and the true horrors of the death camps.
