As educators, we all love to think that we have wonderful students who are eager to learn. While I do think I have wonderful students, they don't always come eager to learn. They sometimes lack the motivation needed for success, but they do value education and the benefits of getting a quality education. My students often want to do well and have good intentions but are sometimes challenged to think and learn in the traditional style classroom.
My students love helping each other, and being student leaders.
They love to have power and it empowers them to engage in the classroom. Their engagement in the classroom also affords them to become their own self advocates. Through the integration of technology, my students will be able to utilize other skills that hopefully will help them see math in the real world and be 21 st Century learners and thinkers.
My Project
Having the electronics in the classroom will allow students to become teachers and tutors. Students can learn techniques/strategies to help them develop better communication and collaboration skills, creative thinking, and to think critically. Understanding what technology to use and how to use it helps students beyond the classroom. With the Camtasia software, tablets, Echo smartpens, and document camera, students will have the opportunity to create instructional videos from which others students can learn whether they are present or absent. In fact, it will be very helpful in creating a flipped classroom and/or distant learning experience.
Additionally, the students will become more engaged in the classroom and take more responsibility for their own learning.
Having the ability to capture their thinking and use it as a reflection tool will certainly aid in establishing mathematical reasoning and debate in the classroom. Simple classroom supplies such as giant Post-it sticky pads, Command Strips, Sharpies, and Expo markers are helpful tools that will allow students to collect and share information during whole class instruction or student presentations. Hence, student thoughts or ideologies can be displayed as a point of reference in the classroom or hallways for others to see. Additionally, having access to a pencil sharpener and teacher stamp will help with overall student motivation, preparedness and focus. The organizers will be used to provide routine places to turn in work or retrieve supplies so that we have established rules and procedures in creating a safe classroom, conducive to learning.
These future leaders and teachers will be inspired to become productive 21st-century citizens as well as the value of being technology savvy. With the requested supplies, many learning styles can be addressed. Students will use the technology to create their own Khan Academy which can improve their presentation skills.
