Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, creative and curious kiddos! They absolutely love to be active and learn through song and other multi-modal strategies. They come to school every day with a smile and ready for adventure. They really brighten my day.
For young, inquisitive learners, a lack of resources should not be an obstacle.
Many of my students have difficulty completing assignments because of a lack of supplies and resources. We are a Title One school (low socioeconomic status) located in South Florida with a high population of blue collar and migrant workers.
Each child in my classroom has their own learning style. They are all at different places in their educational journey. That's why I implement a variety of learning strategies including group work, singing, kinesthetics and other alternative learning options to ensure every child reaches their highest potential! I am truly honored to have the opportunity to educate and influence their young minds.
My Project
People always ask "when will I ever use calculus in real life?" Granted...
However, the math we learn in first grade is the math we do in our heads as adults; in real life.
Well, before we had this automaticity, we needed to learn the foundation of the concepts. And Ten is a base number that students would benefit from understanding. They will need to make tens in their heads when doing mental math. This is where the magnetic ten frames and ten frames response boards will help. Addition and subtraction are also vital operations my students will need to master this coming year. Visualize it! Part-Whole/Place Value Cards will reinforce the strategies used to add and subtract.
Part of my class room routine includes center rotations and these center activities will be effective learning tools. They have simple instructions including pictures that make it easy for non readers to participate and foster independence. It will also be very helpful to have pre-made centers as it is very time consuming to make centers from scratch. This will free me up to put effort into other endeavors like lesson planning.
