I am starting over in 4th grade at a very rural school in Western North Carolina. We are a title I school that has disadvantaged students. Most of my students are at risk and need my help and support.
I have very few math supplies for my students. These students need hands-on material to grasp and master concepts. I would like to have manipulatives because they are essential to helping my students move ahead in math. I am certain that these students would benefit from hands-on projects during our lessons. Students need to discover the patterns in math and concepts. The students that are taught just the algorithms are at a disadvantage because they do not know the concept behind the algorithm. The low disadvantage students need to be able to work with manipulatives.
The supplies I have proposed are items that every classroom SHOULD have. I cannot afford to buy all these math supplies that we desperately need. (Even though I do at time)
Some children need to SEE and TOUCH math to understand it. These basic manipulatives can change the way my students learn math. Fractions, money, graphing, multiplication, division, decimals, probability and problem solving are the key elements for all third, fourth, and fifth grade testing.
These math supplies will be invaluable to my students. I would like to thank you in advance for helping my students for years to come.
