My goal this year with my 3rd grade students is to increase their interest in mathematics. It is difficult for some students to become excited about math. The key is to surround them with materials they cannot resist. I plan to capture their attention in math two ways using math storybooks and math journals. We are going to call this subject "Mathing" which will be made up of reading and creative writing in mathematics. First, I plan to expose the students to a new concept by reading a storybook that will supplement the mathematics lesson. For example when we learn about polygons, we will read "The Greedy Triangle" which allows the students to recognize polygons in their everyday lives. After we finish reading the book, it will become part of our classroom library so my students can check it out and take it home to read. Second, I will encourage them to write creatively in their math journals allowing them the freedom to write about the something from the book or the concept that was covered in the math lesson. I will encourage students to write fiction pieces that relate to the book or nonfiction writing such as creating a problem and a solution using the skill. Writing about what they have read will help them increase their literacy skills and begin to understand mathematics concepts in a way that is meaningful to them. I have been teaching 5th grade for the past two years at Paul Revere Elementary on Chicago's south side and I am looking forward to a move to 3rd grade. With this change I am need of materials to supplement my curriculum so we can start "Mathing". Having a variety of math story books and math journals for each student will enable this project to benefit the all of the students in my class throughout the year. Our new subject called "Mathing" can be a reality with your generous gift.
