Do you remember being quizzed by your loved ones on your multiplication and division facts? Many of the students I teach would not be able to relate.
I teach in a high poverty neighborhood of Philadelphia where math is not always the strongest subject for my students.
There is a strong focus on word problems and being able to explain your answer, which many of my students struggle with completing due to low reading levels.
The greatest attribute of my students though, is that despite the troublesome environment and personal setbacks, they still have an incredible ability and eagerness to learn-especially with hands-on materials.
My Project
The Philadelphia School District is focusing on Common Core Shifts with Mathematics where they encourage teachers to put more focus, coherence and rigor into the standards they are teaching.
The materials I am asking for will help students become better prepared to focus and dissect word problems and help them conceptualize procedural math.
The "What is the Best Strategy" Problem Solving Center cards and the Power Pen Word Problem Quiz cards will help reinforce the strategies used in class and help my students think differently about math in a more fun and engaging way. With your donation, students will be able to work in small group centers with rigorous hands on materials.
