I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in a large Chicago inner-city high school. We serve children from all over the world. (66 different countries at last count) With so much diversity, I thought it would be a great idea to acknowledging the similarities that serve as a common bond for most young people, namely, their interest in popular culture, music and sports.
Since my job as a teacher is to foster their academic development, having students write about issues that are of interest to them is the key in motivating them to learn. That is how my students and I came up with the idea for the Mather Zine. Unlike the school newspaper, our magazine contains art, poetry, stories, some news, and general info on how to survive high school and their world after high school.
Once students type their work it has to be printed and checked for errors and checked to see how it looks with various pictures. We do not use programs such as Adobe (except for the cover) for various reasons. For one, not all of my students know Adobe and secondly we like to have more control over how to fit everything in place.
This gives my students and me time to sit together, come up with ideas and cut and paste. I think my students and I enjoy that part of making the magazine the most. However, without a printer we are unable to get our work from the computer onto paper and ready to submit to a printing company. I found that a printer/copier/scanner works best for our needs. That way we can save art students want to submit without the student actually having to leave it with us. With a printer we are also able to print pictures from a digital camera or clipart from the computer. There are so many reasons why we need a printer. This printer will also show students that they have all the equipment necessary to put together their magazine and do not have to run all over the school trying to find someone willing to print their work. In addition, no one has a color copier at our school, which means that we are unable to print photos or catchy fliers. We really need a printer to complete our publishing needs.
