Hello! I am a preschool educator at a STEM Magnet School in an urban school district. I have the privilege of teaching 15 naturally curious four-year-old students who come from a variety of ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
My students are motivated learners and to support their motivation to learn, it is important that I create a physically stimulating and creative classroom environment that will spur on inquiry.
For that reason, I need to replace my tired and uninspiring classroom carpet. The one I am seeking is not only colorful, bright, and engaging but also build s on number sense awareness skills in a fun way!
My Project
Mathematics rocks! is the message I impart to my preschool four-and five year-old students on a daily basis! To increase understanding through active participation in mathematics activities, I am constantly thinking of new ways to encourage hands on minds on learning activities.
Providing the students with an interactive classroom carpet to increase number sense awareness skills, is a developmentally appropriate means to achieving this goal!
I am eagerly anticipating the funding of this project as I know it will make an impact on how the students will perceive and use numbers in their preschool education - and beyond!
There are many ways in which I intend to use this particular carpet for mathematics instruction including: to develop number recognition skills (our goal is for the students is to recognize numbers 1-20 for Kindergarten readiness), increasing oral counting skills by counting the bees on the carpet, and teaching basic addition and subtraction concepts using large dice to count on or subtract bees from a particular starting point, to name a few.
