I have some pretty amazing students. They are all growing and learning at different levels. They all want to be successful and are driven to do well in school.
My students love to learn.
And they love to learn about math. Every day they are always asking me when do they get to do math centers. These 3rd graders love doing hands-on math! Our math centers are one area where, in school, they are all on the same level with learning and having fun in the process!
My Project
I am a new teacher who doesn't have a lot of math manipulatives. I am always going to other teachers and asking to borrow things. Every day we do math centers where my students use different math manipulatives to help them understand concepts. My students love using math tools and manipulatives to help them learn about the different math concepts.
Right now my students are learning area and perimeter.
One of the centers we do is using pattern blocks to build different shapes to find out what the area is between two shapes and compare if they are different or the same. Another center is where they work in pairs using area tiles. One partner makes two or three different shapes and the other has to find the area or perimeter.
After area and perimeter we will be moving onto fractions. The Magnetic Fraction Circles will be a great tool my students can use in different centers to help with their understanding of fractions.
In 3rd grade you hit multiplication hard. Every day my students work on multiplication facts. Sometimes writing facts down and doing flash cards can get monotonous. The Factor Triangles and the Visualize Math Write & Wipe Boards will be a great asset that my students can daily use to quiz themselves, or each other, with their math facts. I'm also requesting Pattern Blocks, Dominoes, Giant Geometric Shapes, Tangrams, and Number Tiles for other math activities.
My students will greatly benefit to be in a classroom where manipulatives are readily available for them to use. It will be wonderful to have the tools I need for my students in my own classroom, instead of having to go and ask a handful of different teachers to see what they have.
