Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of twenty-four third graders that are passionate about learning. Our school was just awarded the California Distinguished School award for 2020. Our school has a diverse population with the majority of our students coming from low-income families.
We strive to close the achievement gap at our school, and we are succeeding.
We have high expectations of our students, and they work hard to reach them. We promote the importance of college through the No Excuses University network. Our classroom represents NYU.
My Project
My students need base ten blocks to represent three-digit addition and subtraction problems. These base ten blocks will be used to solve word problems as well as two and three-digit math problems.
Students learn how the algorithm works as they manipulate base ten blocks.
They can visually see how they need to trade hundreds and/or ten for ones. They share their mathematical thinking with each other on a daily basis. These magnetic blocks will allow them to demonstrate how they solved problems on the whiteboard for the whole class to see. My students get really excited about sharing their math ideas with each other, and they love to use special materials!
