How many hundreds are in 10,000? This is the kind of question National Common Core standards are asking during our math lessons. What if you were having trouble trying to remember where the hundreds place is located? Practice doesn't make perfect; it makes permanent. We want to practice correctly.
I teach in a high poverty area where majority of my students are on free/reduced lunch.
I have a great group of 50 students who are hungry for learning. I teach them to believe that they are kings and queens of their learning. They struggle to make connections with the way math is being taught and their real world. I would like to fill in the deficits in their mathematical foundations. I have a group of special education students that come in for inclusion during math/science/social studies. They work hard and offering time on the iPad mini would be a priceless reward. We are a school of leadership and the students will be responsible for ensuring the iPad minis are being used for enrichment or remediation. Accountability partners will be parent volunteers and their peers.
My Project
I grew up in a home with a family computer and my own email account at 13. I teach students who do not have that luxury. It concerns me how they will be competitive on a global scale in 10 years when they are entering college or the workforce. I would like to bring the gift of technology into their hands by having iPad minis as math practice tools. There are plenty of apps that can be downloaded that will reinforce the concepts that our math curriculum expects them to master. I have high expectations for my students and their success is my joy. I would like to see them use the iPad mini to fuel the desire for knowledge as well as begin to master basic math skills to reach lifelong goals.
My students are also in a high stakes testing grade where if they do not score a basic on the math/reading portion of the Louisiana Education Assessment Program they will not move on to the next grade.
I would like to provide students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their achievement before the testing in April. iPad minis will not only be a reward and a practice tool, but it will also be a start to living in a world where they can be a king or queen of their life.
