Mathematicians Need Reading Books Too!

My students need reading books in order to bring Mathematical content to life and to form a deep conceptual understanding!

My Students

As a third grade math and science teacher, I have the privilege of instilling my students with the foundation knowledge and skills they will utilize for the rest of their lives. My students are so unique and come in with various skills, strengths, interests, and hobbies. The neighborhood is extremely diverse so our classroom is a melting pot of backgrounds, cultures, and religions. We have an ever growing ESL population. Being very diverse, my students also have various learning needs that need to be met in order for them to be successful and reach their fullest potential. It's my goal and passion to foster and meet those needs with various techniques, approaches, strategies, and materials to ensure everyone's success.

My Project

Math can be challenging, tough, and intimidating to eight/nine year-olds, understandably. My goal is to bring third grade math concepts to life by utilizing these books as a read-aloud during my daily lessons to engage students, but mostly to demonstrate these concepts in real world settings to create a deeper understanding of the content! These books have excellent visuals as well as unit vocabulary. This is another way I am meeting the various learning needs of my students in the Math classroom, specifically the visual and auditory learners.

These are more than just books or stories, these texts will help me illustrate all of the important concepts we cover in third grade such including Place Value, Multiplication, Division, Area, Perimeter, Fractions, Time, Graphing, Capacity/Mass, Measurement, and Geometry; with visuals, vocabulary, and real world connections.

This will be super beneficial to my large ESL population and IEP students whom depend on visuals for conceptual understanding and processing.
