I teach 19 wonderful second graders. Each day when my students walk into our building, they are greeted by our school family. They feel a warm, caring environment from the moment they walk in the building until they leave. We are a public Title I elementary school located in an urban neighborhood in Nevada. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and include many English language learners. Our campus has a very high level of economically disadvantaged elementary school students. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and some students take home a backpack of food for the weekend.
My Project
I use math manipulatives for almost every math lesson I teach. However, I do not have enough ten blocks! The manipulatives that I am requesting will help my students to practice counting, adding, subtracting and regrouping. Students will have access to these manipulatives during number talks, math instructions, and math rotations. Students at all levels and abilities learn by doing, which means if they have the tools they need, they are able to grasp and master unknown skills. Not only will these math manipulatives be used in class they will be used for our Family STEAM night. I am in charge of our place value math station. With your help I will have enough base ten blocks for this special night with our families. In addition to math manipulatives, I requested 10 small 5-compartment containers from the Container Store. These containers will be used so each child has their own student bank. Also, my class has been participating in a global postcard exchange. We recently added a few additional overseas classrooms to our exchange. Therefore, I have added one additional sheet of postcard stamps so we can mail out our Nevada Postcards. Please help my students gain the tools they need to be global citizens and successful mathematicians!
