The students in my school come from diverse backgrounds with varied experiences. Over 80% of the students come from considerable poverty.
This year 100% of the students in our district receive free lunches, due to the poverty rate in our community.
My students are in second grade. They all have a learning disabilty. I am impressed with how hard they all work in my classroom. Each one puts forth 110% even when they find their work to be quite difficult.
My Project
I teach in a second grade learning support classroom. This classroom was created this school year to help support the other second-grade learning support teacher with the high number of students. As such, I was given a classroom with very little in it. I often have to walk around the school trying to borrow the math manipulatives that I need for my math lesson. I do not have these supplies in my new classroom. I am in this classroom each morning prior to traveling to a kindergarten classroom for the afternoon. Due to traveling between buildings, I often do not have the time needed to borrow materials from others. I would like to receive Unifix Cubes to help my students with their addition and subtractions skills, plastic coins to help them learn to count money (a much-needed life skill), and clocks to help us practice telling time.
I am hoping to receive hands-on materials that allow my students to actively work on their math skills.
The materials that I am asking for will allow my students hands-on learning for their math skills. My students need hands-on materials to help them learn needed math skills such as telling time, additi9n, subtraction, and counting money.
