This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My first grade students are 6 and 7 years old. They are energetic, funny, kind and motivated to learn. They come to school and try their best every single day. This is one of the many reasons why I love these kids because they never want to give up and are eager to learn new things. I have 16 girls and 6 boys in my class. They are a sweet, diverse bunch of learners who work hard to become prepared for second grade.
My Project
My students need math manipulative toolboxes to help them succeed during math. Students need to be able to have hands-on materials, especially during math to really be sure they understand and develop a true understanding of how they get to an answer.
Students need to understand why 2+2=4, not just because it does.
The only way to help students with this is for each student to be able to have their own set of manipulatives to use and explore. Today's learners need more than just a piece of paper and pencil to succeed. The only way I will be able to provide this for students will be for them to have the math toolboxes.
