Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students, a majority of whom are English language learners, attend a Title I school, highly impacted by poverty and trauma. However, my students' resiliency to these adverse conditions is inspiring. In an effort to help foster their resiliency and meet their needs, students at our school are now learning within a two-teacher model. I am their math teacher.
My students come to me wanting and excited to learn math, especially when hands-on materials are available for them to build concrete understanding of math concepts.
My Project
These hands-on math materials will engage all my students, especially my English language learners to construct deep understanding of abstract math concepts.
Student rekenreks and array frames will help students to develop number sense, a skill that most of my students are currently lacking, but is CRITICAL in basic mathematics.
It is crucial that this skill is developed so my students will not struggle in the future.
Engaging, independent file folder games and activities will keep my students learning as I lead small group math instruction.
Having sufficient amounts of math materials in their hands, students can demonstrate and vocalize their mathematical thinking.
