My students need dry erase boards, markers, and pencils in order to actively engage in math during teacher-led, cooperative, and independent learning activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Excited. Learners. Teachers. Motivators. Leaders. Achievers. My babies! Each day, my students come to school ready for the adventures of third grade. I am constantly laughing and smiling because they make coming to work so enjoyable. Their excitement for learning fills my heart. My students moan when they get called early to go home because they don't want to miss the math or science lesson. They ask for extra homework and have on several occasions voted to stay inside and do an extended science lesson rather than go outside for recess. Unfortunately, many of them face the challenges of growing up in a household with a parent who is barely able to make ends meet. The vast majority receive services for free or reduced lunch. Classroom supplies and funds for field trips must be requested well in advance because their parents have to save up to purchase their school supplies. Through it all, they come to school, set goals, and work hard to achieve those goals.
My Project
We've only been in school for one week and many of my students are without pencils. The ones we use in class often go walking because my students are excited to complete their homework and need the pencils to complete the assignment. In order to increase student engagement and allow for quick and colorful written responses, I've integrated the use of personal white boards for my students. The boards we are currently using are ones I purchased over 6 years ago and many are barely still usable. Even though they are heavily stained and scratched from over 6 years of every day use, the students still prefer the boards over always using paper and pencil. After all, there's just something about the joy of using a dry erase board that helps our math games come alive.
