Mathematicians Like Painters and Poets Create Patterns
My students need two Hands-on Standards Sets and math games to improve their mathematical reasoning, a weather station and weather games for science enrichment.
The students in our alternative classroom have diverse backgrounds and skill levels and do best in a hands-on environment.
A mathematician, like a painter or poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas.

A traditional classroom is not the best fit for our students.
They are active busy learners with diverse abilities that don't necessarily fit into grade level standards. They are curious and interested in the world around them. Some excel in art; some are extremely observant. Some are highly kinesthetic. They all need a place to succeed and show their gifts. They do best with hands-on active lessons that engage all their senses. Manipulatives, games and physical activities work well.
My Project
We are focusing on increasing math fluency and scientific observation skills in our STEM classes this year. Our students will be able to work collaboratively in teams to solve problems and discover principals of observation and research in their daily lives. The weather games and the math games will allow the students to master concepts in a fun and engaging manner. Working collaboratively with these teaching tools will help them see the power of teamwork in problem solving. These resources will help students with differing skill levels to work together to accomplish shared goals.
The activities these donations will provide will help the students realize they are scientists and mathematicians.
The patterns they discover will help explain the world around them. The active learning they will do will help these patterns to truly become more permanent and carry with them as they move on in their educations.
