My students are energetic, curious, four and five year olds who love to learn through play and exploration. Many come from homes that don’t have any toys, books, or even basic school supplies. Some leave each school day wondering where they will sleep that night or if they will have another meal until the next school day. No matter their circumstances these children are fun loving, full of life, and very willing to fill their young minds with new information and knowledge.
My Project
These mathematical materials will help my students develop the basic math skills needed for kindergarten.
The counting tubes and rods will allow the students to physically manipulate the objects as they count the objects.
They will also aid in developing number identification, one-on-one correspondence, and making sets. The puzzles will allow students to develop problem solving skills as they maneuver the pieces into the correct place. The color puzzle will help students develop color identification skills as they manipulate the pieces.
The shape rods activity will provide the students with a chance to organize the objects in such a manor to create groups according to their shape and encourage open exploration.
