Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fantastic first graders enjoy math but they need to enhance their conceptual math understanding and promote cooperative learning. Through the use of manipulatives my students will be able to physically observe, manipulate and act out the math problems they are working on aligned to CCSS.
My first graders are in a cooperative learning magnet class.
We promote learning through student interaction, projects, and accountable talk. Half of my students are English language learners who are developing the English language through enriching activities working alongside their peers. They are all motivated students who have great support at school and at home to maximize their learning to make them a life long learner.
My Project
In receiving the Math standards learning center and scissors for my class, my students will have a functional math center where they can reinforce and acquire math concepts. They will be able to manipulate math through the use of these materials to broaden their conceptual knowledge rather than just doing math with pencil and paper. Mental math is a great skill to have but through the use of manipulatives their conceptual knowledge will be heightened.
I want to provide my students with the best learning experiences possible to maximize their learning potential.
I create my own manipulatives to offer hands-on learning experiences, but by having these actual materials they will have an abundance of manipulatives to use during cooperative math time, as well as at math centers.
