Mathematicians in the Making: Hands-on Activities to Support
My students need 2 graphing trays, math activity cards, 2 Venn Diagram trays, and other manipulatives to engage them and enhance our hands-on math curriculum. These will provide them with the support and tools they need.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the first time math made sense to you? My students need to see concrete examples of a mathematical concept before it can make sense to them in the abstract way that math makes sense to adults. Help make math fun for my students by helping them discover math in different ways.
My students are still eager to learn!
It's a great age, but also an important one. Third grade can be a make or break grade for many students. My students are still very impressionable and look at school as a "safe place" in their changing lives. Many of my students come from families that struggle to provide basic needs - food, clothing, school supplies, etc.
Our school is one that students love to come to on a daily basis. It creates a love for learning within each child. I was a student at this very same school, and the atmosphere it created for me as a child made me want to return as a teacher. Times have changed; our students population is very different now, but the atmosphere is still the same.
My Project
My students will be able to explore math concepts in fun, engaging, hands-on ways with the resorces I am requesting. The items will help my students SEE the math concepts as their brains focus on creating and seeing the math concepts abstractly. The ultimate goal is abstract mastery, but learning by means of concrete ways is the first step.
I have requested math activities, centers, games and manipulatives to engage them and enhance our hands-on math curriculum to provide them with the support and tools they need.
In a suffering economy it is difficult to afford these items on my own with help from parents in my classroom.
I am a new teacher who is trying to build my "library" of resources to use with my students on a daily basis. The items will be used by my current class as well as future classes - so it will definitely be an investment. Your help is greatly appreciated!!
