A fellow teacher once shared 'How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our high school.'
The learning my students complete this year will pave the way to higher success rates of becoming active citizens.
I am a Kindergarten teacher serving students living in North Philadelphia. A population of people that have a need for quality education. It is imperative that I make a great first impression of school for my students, and that my students have high performance scores.
When I sit down to read with my students they love to become the characters in the text. From identifying character feelings and motivation to changing their voice to become a dinosaur in the story. They absolutely love bringing books to life. We do demonstrations of read aloud books to bring a concept alive and students love peer to peer teach backs. It is important to my classroom community that my students have the resources necessary for early learning.
I teach in a low income area where 95% or more of the students receive free or reduced lunch. My students are very exploratory and they love to learn in different capacities and ways. They are very excited when they can connect what they have learned from a digital resource to real life applications. For example, my students are often singing math songs to help them with applying math concepts. I also have parents tell me that their child is at home playing teacher. We are excited to gain access to more digital media to grow our math minds!
We are in a digital age where adults do their adulting (both work and recreational duties) digitally, children play digitally (cellphones, tablets, computers), but many of them don't have the means to learn digitally.
My project is to incorporate more media into the classroom for students to have opportunity to get individual or small group support. The Math listening centers will help students strengthen math skills in counting, geometry, measurement, and algebraic concepts. Specifically the Simple Addition and Subtraction Listening Center will help students will help students further their knowledge of adding and subtracting.
They often are happy to know that what they have learned through their digital resource; can be applied to everyday living. For example, my children are often identifying rhyming words and isolating beginning sounds in words because of what they have learned and practiced in a listening center. We are excited to gain access to more digital media!
