Mathematically Artistic; Artistically Mathematic - Part 2
My students need the heat transfers to print their designs onto a medium that can be applied to their shirts. They need the Cricut Easypress heat press to permanently affix the designs to their shirts.
Our kids, and I say our because these kids belong not just to their respective families but also to us here at school, their local communities and our shared global community of future leaders, come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. One thing they all share is a fondness for creativity and a yearning for practical ways to apply the skills they learn, especially in math.
Our kids are bright and hungry for ways to engage in self-expression that is both positive and productive.
They are wildly imaginative and seem to search for ways to express that imagination. With all of this desire to learn and make connections between school and life, they are sometimes concerned about how the skills they learn will transfer into real life, usable, ever day skills.
My Project
When learning or even practicing some math skills, students ask me, "Where am I going to use this?" We had the idea to show kids practical ways in which they can use the math skills that they learn. For the first project of the year we decided to partner with our art teacher to use geometric shapes. Using the geometry concepts of rigid and non-rigid transformations and mixing it with the creativity of graffiti the kids will produce custom, personalized, wearable designs. Each student can print their design on printable heat press vinyl, cut the design as one complete art piece and then, using a heat press, press their design on their t-shirt.
