My students are from a rural community in Maine. We attend a public school where 63% of students are economically disadvantaged. I am a second grade teacher and I often wonder how we expect 7 and 8 year olds to sit for such long periods of time with paper and pencil tasks. I have found that in order to get students involved and excited about learning, we need to give them hands-on, meaningful tasks. Math manipulatives and games will help students to not only see math concepts in different ways but will also aid them in becoming deeper problem solvers.
My Project
My students come to school eager to learn every day. I have noticed such frustration in them when they struggle to grasp the basic math concepts necessary for richer, deeper problem solving. Through these fraction circles and bars, perimeter and area hands-on measurement center, math write and wipe boards, books, and games they will be able to gain these basic skills by seeing the numbers and concepts in different ways, hearing stories that can relate to their own lives and practicing with them through fun.
Your generous donation will provide our classroom with the tools needed to help students develop solid foundational math skills.
Future careers require individuals with solid math knowledge. By building these skills now, students will be ready for more complex problem solving task when they reach 3rd, 4th, 5th grade and beyond. In turn creating mathematical thinkers for the future.
