Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in the middle of the city, in an industrial district. Our high poverty, Title I school is hidden behind many manufacturing buildings and has very few places for the students to run and play. 100% of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
We are a new STEM Magnet School, with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Science.
We are creating an environment that encourages unique learning, creativity, independence and cooperative learning.
My Project
As my school is approaching a different curriculum for math, my students need more hands-on materials to supplement their learning. Our new math curriculum really focuses on basic number sense for a good portion of the school year, and I do not have the most commonly used supplies for them.
The whiteboards, rulers and rekenreks will help my students to feel more confident in their mathematical skills.
The whiteboards not only use less paper, but they also help students to easily write their answers and change as needed without much struggle. Students will also begin to start measuring with rulers immediately, which is a very important skill for them to have as they get older. The rekenreks are to get my students counting using beads that are visually grouped by 5s. At the end of the year, my students will have a better understanding of number sense with using these materials.
