My classroom is one of hands-on remediation for all students because all students can learn. I am a tier two follow up to curriculum calendar skills previously taught in the regular classroom. Students who did not master through traditional teaching styles are then instructed in both math and reading through smaller group research based instruction. I have approximately two weeks and thirty minute interverals of time to help students grasp difficult concepts. Through using these methods, I know that all students have the ability to grow and fill in gaps to reach mastery.
My students face the challenge of having to tear away at a wall that has kept them from mastery through the traditional classroom. As with all students they learn through different styles and it is 100% necessary. I find that style and give it to them in a way they can grasp it. For many of them this means they must experience it. If interested in a topic we must first be able to relate it to something they can connect with....something they have experience with. Once the connection is made we must use hands-on models to make it concrete....even if this means drawing a picture or making a skit to teach it to our peers. Students retain 95% of what they can teach someone else. Although it takes a lot of work and planning sometimes to attain the mastery we are looking for it is worth is when one child say "Oh, now I get it!"
Many of my students have been provided with an individual education plan and are allowed the assistance of calculators to assist them in computation. Having a set of ten computers would decrease time spent having to share the calculators that exist in a neighboring classroom and increase the amount of time students would benefit and contribute to math instruction.
Measurement is a skill that our school as a whole has struggled with for the past few years. It has became a real focus in my classroom. Students would benefit from the measurement kit because it would make many of the unfamiliar tools used for measuring more concrete for students and give them a foundation for future measurement.
You will make it possible for my students to get the most out of the limited time I have to assure that they master a skill they will need for life. Each child deserves the chance to have this foundation in which they can build future success. This comes with them gaining the confidence to know through hard work and high expectations they can reach whatever goal is put in front of them.
